We celebrated our 80th Independence day
And every year, we hear the same words:
Happy independence day - A day to remember the Independence
But this year, One slightly uncomfortable question crossed my mind
"Are we really independent?
Or have we simply moved from independence to in-dependence?"
We were freed from colonial rule and foreign domination.
But what about today?
We depend on someone's presence to feel safe.
We depend on people to tell us whether we are beautiful.
We depend on society to tell us whether we are successful.
We depend on trends to tell us what is worth wanting.
We depend on approval to tell us whether our choices are right.
And sometimes—
we depend on others so much that we forget to listen to ourselves.
Dependence itself isn't wrong.
No human being is completely independent.
We need one another.
The question is different:
Have we become so dependent that we have forgotten how to be independent?
Do we have the courage to question?
The courage to disagree?
The courage to say no?
The courage to stand alone?
The courage to choose a life we love?
Independence isn't simply the absence of a foreign ruler.
But Independence is the ability to think freely, choose responsibly, speak courageously and live the life we love.
We inherited political independence from those who fought for it.
But personal freedom is something every generation must fight for again. ( Maybe some GenZ's are fighting for this)
Our ancestors removed the chains of colonial rule.
But every generation faces different chains.
Poverty.
Discrimination.
Fear.
Corruption.
Ignorance.
Hatred.
Blind obedience.
And sometimes—
our own indifference.
So Independence Day should not only remind us of the freedom our country won.
Perhaps it should remind us of the freedom we still have to discover.
It is not something we celebrate once a year and forget the next morning.
Moreover, it is not a trophy to be kept in a museum.
Independence is not just being free from someone.
It is being free to become someone.
Congratulations Jazz
